A Stochastic Heuristic Object-Oriented Approach to Satisficing Multiple-Objective Forest Management Problems
نویسنده
چکیده
Lurch, a forest management decision support tool utilizing an object-oriented architecture, has been developed and tested in the context of multiple-objective and multiple-stakeholder forest management planning problems in British Columbia. A satisficing approach based upon Criteria and Indicators, goal programming, and stochastic heuristic sub-optimization is used. The system is controlled interactively through an intuitive graphical user interface. The object-oriented architecture provides fast response, for a very high rate of combinatorial simulation and evaluation cycles. The result is an accessible interactive environment for exploring potential management solutions to complex forest management planning problems. Lurch has been applied to real-world issues in British Columbia.

Type-Based Exploration with Multiple Search Queues for Satisficing Planning
Utilizing multiple queues in Greedy Best-First Search (GBFS) has been proven to be a very effective approach to satisficing planning. Successful techniques include extra queues based on Helpful Actions (or Preferred Operators), as well as using Multiple Heuristics. One weakness of all standard GBFS algorithms is their lack of exploration. All queues used in these methods work as priority queues...
متن کاملA Comparison of Genetic Algorithms and Reinforcement Learning for Optimising Sustainable Forest Management
Sustainable forest management is defined as “the stewardship and use of forests and forest lands in a way, and at a rate, that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfil, now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions [...].” (MCPFE, 1994). As such, forest management has to satisfy multiple and often confl...
متن کاملA discrete-event optimization framework for mixed-speed train timetabling problem
Railway scheduling is a complex task of rail operators that involves the generation of a conflict-free train timetable. This paper presents a discrete-event simulation-based optimization approach for solving the train timetabling problem to minimize total weighted unplanned stop time in a hybrid single and double track railway networks. The designed simulation model is used as a platform for ge...
متن کاملModel and Solution Approach for Multi objective-multi commodity Capacitated Arc Routing Problem with Fuzzy Demand
The capacitated arc routing problem (CARP) is one of the most important routing problems with many applications in real world situations. In some real applications such as urban waste collection and etc., decision makers have to consider more than one objective and investigate the problem under uncertain situations where required edges have demand for more than one type of commodity. So, in thi...
متن کاملA multiple objective approach for joint ordering and pricing planning problem with stochastic lead times
The integration of marketing and demand with logistics and inventories (supply side of companies) may cause multiple improvements; it can revolutionize the management of the revenue of rental companies, hotels, and airlines. In this paper, we develop a multi-objective pricing-inventory model for a retailer. Maximizing the retailer's profit and the service level are the objectives, and shorta...
